MySQL is a true multi-user, multi-threaded SQL database server. SQL (Structured Query Language) is the most popular and standardized database language in the world. MySQL is a client/server implementation that consists of a server daemon mysqld and many different client programs and libraries.

SQL is a standardized language that makes it easy to store, update and access information. For example, you can use SQL to retrieve product information and store customer information for a web site. MySQL is also fast and flexible enough to allow you to store logs and pictures in it.

The main goals of MySQL are speed, robustness and ease of use. MySQL was originally developed because we needed a SQL server that could handle very large databases an order of magnitude faster than what any database vendor could offer to us on inexpensive hardware. We have now been using MySQL since 1996 in an environment with more than 40 databases containing 10,000 tables, of which more than 500 have more than 7 million rows. This is about 100 gigabytes of mission-critical data.

The base upon which MySQL is built is a set of routines that have been used in a highly demanding production environment for many years. Although MySQL is still under development, it already offers a rich and highly useful function set.

Adaptive Server Enterprise can be configured to spawn multiple engines on an SMP system, allowing even distribution of client connections across all engines. The engines also handle disk access

on their own, providing near-linear scaling with the incremental addition of users.

Internal parallelism – including parallel query execution, parallel sort, and parallel utilities – is optimized for the SMP environment.

Multiple threads and engines are used to carry out a single query in order to enhance response times. A parallel query can be completed up to fifteen times faster than the same serial query. By using the

most appropriate degree of parallelism, the parallel-aware optimizer achieves the fastest response time.

—CREATE INDEX allows specifying ascending or descending ordering for each index key, allowing the stored order of the index to reflect the order used most frequently in queries. This feature reduces the sorting required for many queries using ORDER BY;

—Running UPDATE STATISTICS on tables using the new locking strategy will experience greatly reduced locking contentions; • More columns per index

"OR" Processing-optimization improvements for SQL queries that contain "OR" clauses

• Dynamic SQL Performance-Dynamic-SQL requests bypass expensive catalog activity in tempdb through the use of "lightweight stored procedures". Dynamic-SQL statements no longer take exclusive table locks on the "sysobjects" table in tempdb;

• Optimizer Improvements—Internal optimizer enhancements use the new statistics and new interpolation algorithms to improve the costing of queries. These include much more accurate selectivity estimates and improved costing for queries using large I/O.
